3-D printing is revolutionizing the field of rehabilitative medicine, and tackling a problem of particular difficulty in the world of prosthetics. According to NGO LIMBS, only 5% of the nearly 40 million amputees in the developing world have access to prosthetic devices or assistance. The World Health Organization places this number slightly higher – 10% – but the situation for amputees in the developing clearly remains dire.
Arms for ALL Inc. is a non-profit organization utilizes the advantages of CAD design and additive manufacturing to create a ground breaking new approach to prosthetics both in terms of access, cost, and functionality. Arms For ALL is focused on bringing these advantages to the world’s most needy amputees in the USA and abroad. The current lack of medical infrastructure and resources to support the labor-intensive and expensive prospect of traditional prosthetic manufacturing has stifled access to those in need for years.
Cutting Edge 3D Printing Technology
ARMS FOR ALL employs 3D printing tactics that eliminates a substantial portion of the need for shipping, reducing the cost of prosthetics.
Increasing Access to Prosthetics
Traditional prosthetics can cost thousands of dollars. ARMS FOR ALL reduces costs to hundreds of dollars and delivers devices to the end user free of charge.
Creating a More Mobile World
The 3D printing process increases efficiency, safety, and drastically lowers costs. With this technology, universal access to prosthetics can become a reality.
Limb loss is much more common than we realize
Approximately 200,000 people have an amputation annually. That means up to 500 amputations are performed daily. Globally there are over 1 million amputations annually, or one every thirty seconds.
Staggering financial impact
Healthcare costs over the course of one’s lifetime are nearly double for individuals with limb loss, at $509,275 compared to $361,200. Private insurance companies estimate costs associated with limb loss at $12 billion or more annually. Hospital charges alone amount to almost $9 billion.
Rising health concern in the United States
Nearly half of the individuals who have an amputation due to vascular conditions will die within five years. This is higher than the mortality rate for breast cancer, colon and prostate cancer. The number of amputations related to diabetes increased by 24% between 1988 and 2009. This figure is projected to continue increasing annually through 2030.
Lend A Hand
Arms For ALL is Not for Profit seeking sponsors to pay for the cost of each unit our goal is to provide these devices to the end user free of charge.
